Traffic Paints

There a many manufactures of traffic paints in North America.   Even so, there are only a few types of traffic paints available.

Latex Acrilic
Latex traffic paint is a "water" based paint that is specialy formulated for pavement and cement.   Latex paints generally need longer times to dry and higher tempatures to cure.   These paints work well in direct sunlight and hot days.   They are generally applied on surfaces that have been Sealed with a coal tar asphalt sealer or equivalent.  Surfaces must be very clean to get good bonding between substraight and paint.  Use on new asphat is possible but not recomended.   We have experienced bleeding of color and poor wearability due to the oils in newer blacktop.

VOC Compliant Aceton Acrilic
This paints generally are very fast drying and very durable.   These paints hold color extreamly well and look new for a long time after application.   These paints can be used in very cold enviorments and still bond well to asphalt and concrete surfaces. Excellent choice of paints for new asphalt surfaces. Surface cleaning is not as important with this paint as it is with latex paints.   This paint is very fast drying and needs to be handled properly to be applied correctly.   It is almost impossible to apply this paint by roller or brush as it drys too fast and hardens on applicator.

Oil Base Alkyd
In general these paints are no longer used in many states due to VOC laws.  They generally use Paint thinner, VMP Naptha, or Xylene, as the base.   These paints are no longer available in many states.   There are a few suppilers using an acetone based Alkyd paint which has produced good results.

As with all paints, traffic paints have different types of paints for different application needs.   One type of paint is not best for all jobs.  Choosing a contractor that knows which paint to apply to your situation is key to keeping your parking lot looking it best for the long haul.
